Heated chemotherapy inside the abdomen, given during cancer surgery.
HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) is given during an operation. The surgeon first removes the visible tumours in the abdomen (cytoreductive surgery).
A heated chemotherapy solution is then circulated inside the abdominal cavity for a set time, before it is drained and the operation is completed.
It may be considered for selected patients whose cancer has spread to the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum), for example from colorectal, ovarian or appendix cancers, or with peritoneal mesothelioma. The oncology team decides whether a patient is suitable.
