What is IVF?

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a fertility treatment in which eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory.

The resulting embryos are grown for a few days, and one or more are transferred into the uterus. Medicines are used beforehand to help the ovaries produce eggs.

Who may need it?

IVF may be advised for blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, low sperm count or quality, endometriosis, ovulation disorders, unexplained infertility, or when treatments such as IUI have not worked.
